Requirements, Deadlines, and Checklist for Domestic Applicants

NOTE: All potential applicants should complete STAGE 1 of the mathematics department's online admissions application ( Online Application). Doing so will initiate your application folder within the Department of Mathematics. To finalize your application you must complete STAGE 2 of the online form (or its equivilent hard-copy version). Stage 2 is the university application and requires a $30 application fee.

Minimum Requirements for Admission and an Assistantship

  • Completion of the mathematics department's Online Application (or equivalent).

     
  • A score of 700 on the quantitative portion and of 1100 on combined verbal and quantitative portions of GRE. Take the GRE as soon as possible and have an official score report sent to Florida State University. Write directly to Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000 for test times and applications.

     
  • Achievement of 3.0 GPA in the last two years of undergraduate work. Two official transcripts are required.

     
  • Three letters of recommendation. The letters should address your suitability for doing graduate work in at least one of our degree programs and should be written in free-style form. They should be mailed directly from the recommender to the Department of Mathematics.

    Minimum Requirements for a Fellowship

    In addition to the above requirements

  • A score of 1300 on the combined verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE.

     
  • Achievement of 3.5/4.0 GPA in all college work attempted.

    Note: Certain requirements can be waived for members of native ethnic minorities that otherwise show promise.

    Deadlines

    For full consideration by the Graduate Committee, domestic applications should be received approximately seven months prior to the desired date of entrance: March 1 for Fall term (February 1 for fellowships), August 15 for Spring term, and January 1 for Summer term. Late applications will still be considered but complications regarding timely completion of paperwork may delay processing of the application.

    Checklist

     

    1. Complete the math department's online application form.
    2. Submit your FSU admission application (STAGE 2 of the online process) accompanied by check or money order of $30.00 payable to FSU.
    3. Request that official transcripts of all college work attempted be sent from your institution(s) to FSU.
    4. Request that official GRE scores be sent from Educational Testing Service to FSU.
    5. Request that three letters of recommendation be sent directly to FSU.
